CANADA WINTER GAMES 2011 Selection Criteria

A.     Team will consist of 4 male/4 female athletes. In addition 1 female spare and one male spare may be sent at the discretion of Sport Manitoba, and Biathlon Manitoba.

B.     Athletes who wish to be considered for the games team must write a letter to Biathlon Manitoba indicating that they wish to be considered.

C.     All interested athletes must be members of the Biathlon Manitoba in good standing.

D.     Interested athletes must be born 1990-1993 inclusive. Exceptions to this will only be considered in consultation with CWG organizers. In no case will athletes born prior to 1990 be permitted.

E.     Selection will take place during the 2009-10 season based on the following criteria:

  1. Results at Manitoba Cup events 1,2,3 and the Provincial Championships (2010). Results at National Championships (2010) and Western Canadian Championships(2010) may be used if insufficient events are held in Manitoba. Any other National level event (e.g. Noram Cups,) may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee should more information be required.
  2. Best 3 of 5 events – 1 must be the Provincials.
  3. A CWG category will be establish at these events and only results from these categories will be used, except as stated in 1. For athletes who are underage, the results will be considered where appropriate on a comparative basis.
  4. At each event the results will be calculated as a % of the winner’s result.
  5. A male and female spare will be identified.
  6. If  the “natural gap”** is greater than 10% then those team positions will be determined at a selection/testing camp November 2010 (date to be determined). Athletes who fall under Section F will not be used to determine the natural gap. The Noram Cup planned in conjunction with the November 2010 training camp will be the final selection event.

** Natural gap is when there is a noticeable gap in the results. Eg. 100%,98%,92%,75%. Between 92 and 75 there is a noticeable gap.

F.      Athletes selected to the World youth or World Junior Team representing Canada will be automatically selected, however they will be asked to compete in selection events if their schedule permits.

G.     Force Majeur may be considered in the selection process. Force Majeur will normally be invoked only in the case of illness or non-race related accidents which prevent the athlete from competing.

H.     Upon acceptance of selection to the CWG competition team the athlete will be expected to sign a CWG Team Contract which have a Code of Conduct section.

I.       The CWG athletes must attend all training camps leading up to the Games and must maintain a daily training journal in order to maintain their status.

J.      Failure to meet any of the above criteria will open up those positions on the team and those positions will be identified at the special testing/selection camp – November 2010 (refer to E. 6)

G.     Any appeals of Selection Committee (Biathlon Manitoba Technical Chair,Master Coachl Coach, and one other member selected by the Board) decisions must be in writing and received  by BAM within one week of the publication of any decisions. These appeals will be referred to the Biathlon Manitoba Executive and dealt with by BAM appeals procedures.
